Summary

[edit]
Description The Leland Building at 37-39 S. 3rd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia was built in 1855 and was designed in the Italianate style by Stephanie Button for the prosperous merchant Charles Leland. The building is unusual in having an inner court around which it is organized, which provides light and air to more of the building than others of its size. Button also simplified the facade, elimininating much of the normal Italianate ornamentation, a style which caught on with other architects. (Source: Philadelphia Architecture: A Guide to the City)
