  • Darstellung: Spielfeld und Schlachtfeld. Es ist eines der beliebtesten Bildthemen der Jahre 530-480 v. Chr. und ist literarisch gar nicht bezeugt. Zwei Krieger — manchmal durch Inschriften als Aias und Achilles benannt — sind unter den Augen Athenas in ein Brettspiel vertieft. Die Wucht und existenzielle Ausnahmesituation der Schlacht werden hier der ungefährlichen Auseinandersetzung. auf dem Spielfeld gegenübergestellt. Nur scheinbar ohne Pointe erlaubt das Bildthema den Betrachtern verschiedene Beobachtungen zum Verhältnis von Krieg und Spiel.

  • Darstellung: Im Kriege nichts Neues - Vier Krieger kämpfen über dem Schild eines Gefallenen. Ein Bezug zu einem spezifischen Mythos ist nicht nachweisbar, doch das Grundthema ist aus dem Heldenepos bekannt und auf die Gegenwart übertragbar.
