Leinster Bay Waterfront is owned and managed by Virgin Islands National Park. It is a site in the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The Leinster Bay Waterfront, located on the island of St. John, is centered nearby what used to be the largest sugar plantation on the island. Since Dutch colonization began, individuals found ways to escape from their slaveholders. When the neighboring island of Tortola, a part of the British West Indies, abolished slavery in 1834, freedom seekers began escaping from St. John. Despite attempts to dissuade people from escaping, such as construction of a guardhouse, whose ruins are seen here, to surveille the coastline, freedom seekers prevailed.
