Summary
[edit]DescriptionLeich-Gaede House, Buffalo, New York - 20210331.jpg |
English: The Leich-Gaede House, 112 North Parade Avenue, Buffalo, New York, March 2021. An 1896-vintage residence in an odd hybrid style that defies easy classification, local architectural historian Kelsie Hoke describes the aesthetic as "eclectic Victorian-era... in a very restrained Renaissance Revival style, with some elements from the Mediterranean and the Queen Anne." The slender arched windows in the front bay and above the entrance signify the former, while the flaring on the front gable adds a touch of the latter, and even the crenellation above the front windows is an unexpected touch that adds a splash of English Tudor. Given these stylistic elements, it's reasonable to assume the house was renovated to its present appearance in approximately the 1910s or '20s. The house's first owner was John Leich (1872-1923), a stone engraver who would later work for Pierce-Arrow, but he only lived there for a year, and the next several years saw it bounce between a series of short-term occupants. It finally found stable ownership in 1900 with its sale to German-born cabinetmaker John Gaede (1853-1928), who lived there with his wife and nine children for the next thirteen years. |
