Description
English: The Leicester Cooperative Boot & Shoe Manufacturing Society Ltd factory on Western Road was once a massive complex - see 1935 aerial photo of Great Central loco shed a few posts back. This very impressive entrance and carved stonework still announces the entrance to the main office block. Sadly once inside it becomes just another student apartment complex built on a former industrial site. Industry in 21st century Leicester is all about bums on seats at De Montfort University. Alice Hawkins, a shoe machinist at Equity Works, helped lead the Suffragette campaign in Leicester and gave speeches in London. There is a blue plaque on the wall and this week it has been announced that, following a large donation, a statue of her will be erected in the city.
