Summary
[edit]DescriptionLegal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. - fmr Mountain Clinic Hospital, George Fobes House - Olean, New York - 20210730.jpg |
English: Legal Assistance of Western New York, 103 South Barry Street at East State Street, Olean, New York, July 2021. A two-and-a-half story wood-framed residence faced in a smooth red brick veneer, this former residence was built in 1909 or '10 and - with its asymmetrical façade, the Classical detailing on the entrance portico and enclosed semicircular porch, the elegant carvings, and of course its prominent corner tower with conical roof and shingle siding on the topmost level - serves as a fine late-period example of the Queen Anne style of architecture. The house was built for George Fobes (1868-1930), who as head of the Olean Electric Light Company, investor in a wide variety of local business interests from oil to timber to real estate, and onetime Commissioner of Public Works, was one of Olean's most prominent commercial and civic bigwigs of his day. Fobes lived there with his wife Josephine and daughter Marjorie, but only for a short time: in 1917, the building was sold for use as an annex to the Mountain Clinic, whose main building was being erected next door at 202 East State Street (the side of that building is visible here at far left). Inaugurated the next year and named for its founder, Dr. William H. Mountain, the facility comprised Olean's municipal hospital, a nursing school, and, at the former family farmstead in the nearby town of Caneadea, the short-lived David A. Mountain Home for Aged Physicians, which was shuttered in 1927 after only five years in operation. The former Fobes House was repurposed as medical offices for hospital staff, and continued to serve as such even for some time after the hospital's 1968 closure. However, both buildings had been vacant for decades as of a 2006 report in the Buffalo News regarding the proposed leasing of the Fobes House to Southern Tier Legal Services and redevelopment of the hospital proper as apartments. The apartment conversion never materialized and that building remains vacant today, but Legal Assistance of Western New York - Southern Tier Legal Services' successor organization, providing free legal aid to those of low income on a not-for-profit basis - continues to occupy the Fobes House. |
