ces refine-ment of feeling, in my own country I have noticed that per-sons of low birth, whose talents and industry have raisedthem to wealth, are susceptible of refinement in their man-ners, habits, and sentiments, in proportion to the develop-ment of this organ and that of Love of Approbation. Whensmall, their primitive condition is apt to stick to themthrough life; when large, they make rapid advances, andimprove by every opportunity of intercourse with their su-periors. This sentiment gives to the conversation, in animated dis-course, splendour, sprightliness and buoyancy. It gives tastein furniture and dress : an elegant vase, couch or chair, orthe human form attired in dress in which grace, utility andbeauty combine, are objects which we delight to see, andwhich we feel to be agreeable.
