The symptoms of spondylitis may be common to thedisease in any part of the spine whatsoever or peculiarto the part of the spine affected. The symptoms com-mon to the disease in any part of the spine are asfollows: The face expresses apprehension, pain, andpremature old age. The patient walks and moves withcare, as if to avoid any jar or sudden movement. Therecan be obtained a history of uneasiness, fretting, and 19 irritability, and for soroe tinie the patient has been dis-inclined to exercise as actively as usual and has beeneasily fatigued. De-formity may or may not have been noticed, and thecomplications—abscess and paralysis—may or may nothave appeared. For proper examination the patient should be strippednaked.
