Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On June 1, 1810, Chief Shateyaronyah of the Native American Wyandot tribe, who was also known as Leatherlips to local settlers, was executed by fellow tribesmen accusing him of practicing witchcraft. The chief had been an advocate for peace with the white settlers, and his execution was witnessed by several settlers, including William Sells. Sells' graphic account of the occurrence was published by Otway Curry in the Ohio newsmagazine, the Hesperian. In the spot where Leatherlips was executed and buried, the Wyandot Club of Columbus erected this Scotch granite monument in his memory in 1889. The monument stands near the east bank of the Scioto River just north of Upper Arlington. This photograph accompanied an article in the December 1918 Norwester magazine describing the life and death of Leatherlips.
