35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Rodentia; Family: Sciuridae; Genus: Eutamias; Genus species: Eutamias minimus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 185-222 mm; Weight: 42-53 g; Identification: The least chipmunk has a brown coat with black and white stripes running down its back and sides. It also has white stripes about and below its eyes; Habitat: Temperate forests, rock cliffs and bluffs; Diet: Omnivore: berries, coniferous tree seeds, cactus fruit, insects, snails; Reproduction: Least chipmunks reach sexual maturity at ten months. Breeding season starts in April after winter torpor. Two to six offspring are born after a gestation period of about 30 days. The young are weaned at 60 days and become independent six weeks later; Social Structure: Chipmunks are territorial; Behavior: Least chipmunks are diurnal and spend most of their time gathering food to store in their burrows. During the winter, they go into a state known as torpor, which is similar to a short, light hibernation; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Predators of the least chipmunk include snakes, weasels, mink, hawks, and cats. If one of these animals is spotted, the chipmunk will issue an alarm call to alert others.
