Summary
[edit]DescriptionLeaf cutter bee nests.jpg |
English: 1. The two leaf columns were 17.5 and 19.5 cm in length
2. The shorter one had 4 compartments (cells) while the lounger one had only 3. 3. In all the, the number of leaf bits used varied from 39-50, with an average of 47 in the shorter column, while the longer one had thicker (wider) compartments, where the bee had used 66-89 leaf bits with an average 71.6=72 leaf bits. In all the bees had used 403 leaf bits to build these two columns. Make note that bringing each leaf bit was a separate trip! 4. Up to 6 layers of leaf bits were used to build the walls of each compartment. Yes, each compartment had six layered walls. Further, each completed compartment was plugged by the base of subsequent cell with overlapping leaf bits. 5. The arrangement of leaf bits in the compartment walls did not show any fixed pattern, and were found wrapped both clockwise and anticlockwise. The mouth of the terminal cell was open. 6. Each compartment had quite a bit of accumulated frass and bits of what looked like cast skin. 7. but for the basal compartment, the bases of subsequent cells had been cored and thus, each column looked like a single tunnel. |
