treaty of peace in 1783 was hailed with great rejoicing. The causes whichled up to Shays Rebellion have been so often and so fully described as to havemade them familiar to every reader of our State history, and we will say nomore of this ill-advised uprising than that the leader of it, Daniel Shays, wasborn in Hopkinton on Saddle Hill, in 1748. He served in the Revolution, roseto the rank of Captain, and was wounded at Bunker Hill. After the collapse ofhis rebellion he fled to New Hampshire and was finally pardoned. He receiveda government pension but died in poverty in 1825. Hopkinton favored the war HISTORICAL SKETCH OF HOFKINTON. 37 of 1812, and nobly sustained her reputation during the late Eebellion, furnish-ing 345 men and expending many thousand dollars. The boot and shoe industry is what built up this town, and it is interestingto know that the practice of pegging boots and shoes originated here. S. & A. Crooks Shoe Factory, Hopkinton. carried on shoe manufacturing in Hopkinton. His five sons were associatedwith him, and the industry steadily increased in importance from year to year.In 1840 Lee Claflin, father of ex-governor Claflin, opened a factory in HaydenEow; the firm of Davenport & Gibbs also opening a factory about the sametime. The subsequent development of the business need not be mentioned indetail. Taken as a whole, the manufacturing establishments of Hopkinton willcompare favorably with those of a like character in any part of the country.Their annual product reaches a very high figure, but the merits of the goods areknown and they find a ready market.
