Jackson was firm inhis intention of asserting the supremacy of the centralgovernment, and a judicious mixture of resolution andforbearance fortunately tided over a very threateningcrisis. A great question among the politicians of that day wasthat of the renewal of the charter of the United StatesBank. Jackson, whose financial theories were of anelementary character, had long marked the bank as a victim.His persistent attacks, backed by popular support, finallywon the day and brought the institution to an end. Jackson retired from the presidency in 1837, but con-tinued to act as leader of the Democratic party. So greatwas his zeal that he afforded the country the spectacle ofan ex-President well-nigh an octogenarian still taking thestumj). His activities continued up to a few weeks of hisdeath, which occurred in 1845; he was then 78 years of age.

ZAGHARY TAYLOR Zachary Taylor, like so many other prominent soldiersof America, came from Virginia. He was born at OrangeCourt-house on the 24th of November, 1784, the thirdchild of Richard Taylor, who had served as colonel of aContinental regiment under the orders of Washington.But Virginia could not claim Zachary Taylor long. Hisfather moved west soon after the close of the Revolution,and Zachary grew up in a frontier settlement on the siteof what is now Louisville. He received, however, a bettereducation than what was then usual so far west, thoughthe little schoolhouse which he attended was in the midstof woods in which Indians were frequently seen lurkingand were occasionally shot. As he left boyhood behind, Zachary Taylor showed arestless, adventurous disposition. In 1806 an opportunitycame for gratifying this taste. That was the year of AaronBurrs conspiracy.
