Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lead flues, Keldheads Difficult to make out, but these appear to be the start of two flues from the lead mill. It was normal to exhaust fumes from the smelters at a considerable distance from the mill. This had two purposes. Firstly, the noxious fumes were carried away from habitable areas - in this case to a chimney some 3 miles distant. Secondly the fumes condensed in the flue, creating deposits of lead in sufficient volume to justify scavenging it from the flue. This was often entrusted to children due to the restricted size of the flue. Life expectancy was not improved as a result!
