Title
Lead alloy papal bulla of Pope Gregory IX
Description
English: A complete lead bulla of Pope Gregory IX, 1227-1241.

The obverse contains the legend GREGORIVS PP VIIII across three lines with a border of pellets although most of this has worn away. The PP stands for Pastor Pastorum or 'Shepherd of Shepherds.

The reverse depicts two busts facing forward with a crucifix between them. They are individually bordered by a line of pellets. Above the two busts are the letters SPA SPE which stands for Sanctus Paulus and Sanctus Petrus or St. Paul and St. Peter. St. Paul is on the left with a long beard and St. Peter is on the right and has hair and beard made up of pellets.

Bullae were used by the Pope as seals for important documents to confirm their authenticity. There would have been two threads passing through the bulla and attached to the document.
