Title |
Lead Roman steelyard weight, top view |
||
Description |
English: Lead Roman steelyard weight. The object is globular, with slight bevelling to the top and bottom faces, suggesting that it may have been biconical but is now worn. The surface is certainly worn and pitted. The iron suspension loop is missing and all that remains are two, slight iron knops where the loop has broken off. The lead is creamy white. It is 66.25mm in diameter and 60.74mm high.
The weight weighs 1152g. A Roman pound or libra is the equivalent of 327.45g. Each pound was made up of twelve Roman ounces or unicae, each of these equivalent to 27.28g. Dividing this steelyard’s weight of 1152 by the libra weight of 327.45 results in 3.5, suggesting that the weight may have been a three and a half (Roman) pound weight. See Collingwood and Wright, 1991, The Roman inscriptions of Britain, volume II, page 1 for a the full discussion on Roman steelyard weights and their equivalents. |
