Murugan, deuxième fils de Shiva, sur sa monture : le paon, sculptures sur le gopuram est du temple de Shiva Nataraja Murugan est entouré de Devasena (?), fille d'Indra et de Valli (?), la fille du roi de la forêt. Le paon est l'animal qui tue les serpents car il sait détruire les instincts qui enchainent l'esprit de l'homme à son corps. Murugan, le frère cadet de Ganesh, est le dieu favori des Tamouls. Il est très populaire en Inde du sud où il peut porter plusieurs noms : Subramanya, Saravanan, Vêlan (celui qui porte la lance), Skanda, Karttikeyan, Kumaran...Il est considéré comme le dieu de la guerre mais on le prie le plus souvent pour guérir une maladie ou obtenir un enfant. En yoga, Skanda est le nom qu'on donne au pouvoir de l'abstinence sexuelle. En cosmologie, Kumaran est identifié à l'énergie solaire.
