Reconstitution de l'entrée sud et de la façade du palais de Mchatta par Bruno Schulz en 1903 Le calife al-Walid II (743-744 après J.-C., dynastie Omeyyade) est à l'origine de la construction de ce palais d'hiver qui était situé dans le désert à 30 km au sud d'Amman, l'actuelle capitale de la Jordanie. Le matériau utilisé est le calcaire, les décors sculptés sont réalisés par blocs De grandes parties de la façade de ce palais inachevé en raison de la mort prématurée du calife ont été données par le sultan ottoman Abdoul Hamid II à l'empereur Guillaume II, qui en fit don aux Musées royaux de Berlin en 1903.
