Carte des routes du pèlerinage au sanctuaire de Moïse au Mont Nebo

Selon la tradition chrétienne, le Mont Nebo, en terre de Moab dans l'antiquité, est le site légendaire du tombeau de Moïse qui y serait mort à 120 ans selon le Livre du Deutéronome (chapitre 34) après avoir vu au loin la terre de Canaan (la Terre promise) avec les Hébreux.

Depuis ce mont, dont l'altitude est de 800 m, on voit en effet par beau temps : la mer morte, l'oasis de Jéricho, Jérusalem, la vallée du Jourdain et la "Terre Promise" .

Un sanctuaire primitif chrétien à 3 absides y a été érigé au IVè siècle pour commémorer la mort de Moïse. D'autres constructions, dont le baptistère orné de mosaïques, ont complété jusqu'au VIIè siècle le sanctuaire d'origine.

C'est pour les chrétiens un important lieu de pèlerinage.
