Le bastion date de 1636, il a été construit à Menton, au bord de mer, par le prince Honoré II Grimaldi pour protéger la ville des Espagnols. Depuis 1967, il héberge le musée testament de Jean Cocteau qui a décoré la salle des mariages de l'hôtel de ville en 1957-1958 et qui à cette époque était attiré par cette ville et son environnement. Le fonds originel du musée du Bastion est constitué de 102 oeuvres, dont 70 dessins, 2 peintures, 3 lithographies, 2 tapisseries, 11 poteries de Jean Cocteau. Parmi les dessins, trois ensembles thématiques se détachent : la série des 21 Innamorati, les 16 sphinx, aussi appelés « animaux fantastiques », ainsi que 7 études pour les décors de la salle des mariages, la plupart de ces oeuvres étant donnée à la ville par Edouard Dermit. Viendront s’ajouter à cette collection historique d’autres donations et acquisitions : l’Association des amis du musée acquiert un ensemble de 17 lithographies originales de Jean Cocteau et Moretti, réalisées en 1963 ; Irène Lagut artiste et proche amie de Cocteau, résidente mentonnaise à la fin de sa vie, fait trois donations successives au musée, dont un ensemble de 50 lettres, billets et cartes postales que Cocteau lui avait destinés.
