L’intérêt pour l’art copte a commencé vers la fin du 19ème siècle: M. Gaston Maspero, un égyptologue français, a regroupé beaucoup d’objets dans des salles spéciales du Musée Egyptien. En 1908, Marcus Simaika Pasha, après avoir obtenu l’accord du Patriarche Kyrillos V, est parvenu à faire construire le Musée Copte sur un terrain consacré à la construction d’une église. Le Musée a été inauguré pour la première fois en 1910, puis de nouveau en 1984, après avoir été restauré. Il devint Musée d’Etat en 1931, et ses collections en provenance des familles et des dons n’ont jamais cessé de s’accroître... La communauté chrétienne copte représente, aujourd’hui, environ 10 % de la population égyptienne.
