INSTALLATIONS DE MATADI l63 Ces ouvrages ont une grande hauteur, lécart entre les niveauxextrêmes connus étant de près de 8 mètres. Les pieux du pierdaval sont vissés dans le fond du fleuve ; ils sont en fer, pleins etont 18 centimètres de diamètre; ceux de la partie voisine dela rive ont seuls 12 centimètres de diamètre. Pour louvragedamont (en construction), on emploie des pieux en acier, creux,de 3i8 millimètres de diamètre extérieur, battus à la lance etremplis de béton après battage; les pieux les plus longs ont25 mètres, fiche comprise. Les quais daccostage ont 100 mètres de longueur chacun.Loutillage est complété par des chalands de 100 et de 5o tonnes,des grues à vapeur, des corps morts. Matadi est actuellement le port le mieux outillé de toute la côteoccidentale dAfrique, et le seul, avec Borna, où les naviresdéchargent leurs marchandises et prennent leur chargementdirectement dans les wagons de chemin de fer.
