Description

Urbain Basset (Grenoble, 1842 - Bernin, 1924), Le Torrent, 1878, fontaine en bronze, Dépôt de l'Etat en 1878. Salon de Paris (1878). Urbain Basset expose une épreuve en plâtre du Torrent, projet de fontaine en 1876, au Salon de Paris. Il emprunte pour réaliser sa sculpture Le Torrent de 2,5 mètres de hauteur, et il la présente au Salon de Paris en 1878. Elle est donc acquise par l'État et envoyée au musée de Grenoble. Elle est installée en place de la Constitution (place Verdun aujourd'hui) en 1884. Le Torrent est posée au Jardin de ville en 1888. En 1942, la fontaine est envoyée en Allemagne pour en récupérer le bronze, mais elle échappe à la fonte et en 1950 est à nouveau à Grenoble. Elle est réinstallés dans le Jardin de Ville en 1985. Le Torrent est symbolisé par un jeune homme qui tient sur sa tête une cruche ornée des signes du zodiaque, sauf le Verseau (déjà représenté par la statue). Selon une source, Basset se serait inspiré de la cascade de Craponoz pour la sculpture Le Torrent, intitulée aussi Le Verseau.
