Description
Français : Le château Haldimand. La place d'Armes. Vue de l'hôtel du Chien d'Or.
« En 1786, le gouverneur Frederick Haldimand fait construire un édifice en face du vieux Château Saint-Louis. Ce dernier, incendié en 1834, est remplacé par une terrasse et les vice-rois quittent l'endroit pour Spencer Wood (Bois-de-Coulonge). Le Château Haldimand devient, en 1857, l'École normale Laval, après avoir connu diverses vocations, dont celle d'avoir servi d'atelier au peintre Antoine Plamondon. Le bâtiment sera détruit en 1892 pour faire place aux premières ailes de l'hôtel Château Frontenac. Les maisons de la rue des Carrières et de la rue Saint-Louis tomberont sous le pic des démolisseurs pour permettre les agrandissements successifs de l'hôtel, entre 1897 et 1924. Quant à la place d'Armes, on y retrouvait déjà une fontaine. » – Société historique de Québec
