We find the poet first in Austria :— Ze Oesterrich lernde ich singen und sagen :In Austria did I learn to sing and say. His career seems to have begun there under Fre-deric (the son of Leopold VI.), who went to the cru-sade in 1197, and died in Palestine in the followingyear. His death is mentioned as the subject of greatgrief to the poet, who must have been then veryyoung. In 1198 began the dissensions as to the successionto the Imperial crown ; and Walter attached himselfto Phihp of Suabia, in opposition to the papal faction,which supported Otho. To this period applies oneof the longest of his songs, a sort of Jeremiad on thetroubles of liis country, which he opens by circum-stantially describing himself in the position in whichhe is drawn in the Manesse MS., seated upon a rock,resting one knee on the other, with the elbow restingon the uppermost, and
