Summary
[edit]DescriptionLaxey Station, Snaefell Mountain Railway Car No 1 - geograph.org.uk - 1528770.jpg |
English: Laxey Station, Snaefell Mountain Railway Car No 1 This mountain railway opened in 1895 from a terminus some distance away from(and higher up than) the present station. Of the six original cars, Nos 1 to 4 and 6 still exist, while No 5 was destroyed by fire in 1970 and a replacement built. As originally built, the cars had unglazed side windows, the passengers' only protection being fabric roller-blinds. Window glass was soon added. The cars ran with their original electrical equipment until 1970, and the uphill journey took 30 minutes. The central 'Fell' rail is only used for braking, and traction is by adhesion only. In the early 1970s the traction motors were replaced by more powerful second-hand motors from Aachen in Germany, and although the uphill journey still takes 30 minutes, I am reliably informed by an inspector that the cars could 'do it easily in ten minutes if we wanted then to'. That, of course, would spoil the fun for the passengers. |
