Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lawn Lodge near Tisbury Lawn Lodge stands at one of several entrances to the grounds of Fonthill Abbey, the romantic gothic folly designed by James Wyatt for the eccentric and obsessive novelist William Beckford in 1796. It was the most extraordinary and eccentric country house ever built in Britain, with a central tower 280 feet high, but much of it was destroyed when the tower collapsed in 1825, see contemporary print and history http://www.architecture.com/HowWeBuiltBritain/HistoricalPeriods/GeorgianWestAndIreland/GeorgianEclecticism/FonthillAbbeyWiltshire.aspx. This view looking north-east shows the lodge with the C road between Newton and Fonthill Bishop just visible to the right.
