Summary

[edit]
Description

Hawaii's Big Island is getting bigger due to the continuous activity of the Kīlauea volcano since 1983. The lava flows down to the coast entering the sea. Extreme cooling of the lava when it meets sea water causes it to turn into black sand; extreme heating of the sea water releases an acidic plume containing water, vapor hydrochloric acid gas (from the sea salt) and volcanic particles.

This photo was taken just before sunset at the Kalapana site.
