Description
English: Colored tintype with a bearded man shown from the waist up, wearing a hat, double-breasted coat with dark collar, and dark, pointed cuffs with a braid. Lauchlan A. MacLean served on Maj. Gen. Sterling Price’s staff with the 8th Division, Missouri State Guard. He served as regimental adjutant of the 1st Missouri Infantry as a captain from June 13 to July 13, 1861. He was appointed to staff as lieutenant serving as aide-de-camp to Brig. Gen. James S. Rains, and then appointed colonel and division adjutant on August 16. He was subsequently appointed lieutenant colonel, P.A.C.S. and Asst. Adj. Gen. of the Cavalry Corps, Army of the Trans-Mississippi. MacLean was killed in a personal encounter with Lt. Col. Robert C. Wood of the 14th Missouri Cavalry Battalion in mid-December 1864. (See Sterling Price’s Lieutenants, 1995.)
