Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in January 2022, a well-preserved ghost sign on the north side of the building at 660 Main Street in downtown Buffalo, New York (now home to Shea's Smith Theater) identifies it as the onetime site of "Buffalo's Leading Restaurant", Laube's Old Spain. Charles Laube, who was already well-known as the owner of a local chain of quick-service cafeterias and lunch counters, opened Old Spain in 1928 as the flagship of his operation. An upscale steak and seafood house whose name had more to do with the Spanish-style interior decor than the menu, its location next door to Shea's Buffalo theater instantly earned the place cachet as a popular celebrity-spotting venue, with the Marx Brothers, Milton Berle, Jackie Coogan, Mary Pickford, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and the Three Stooges figuring among the famous names who dined there. The restaurant was purchased by the Cambria family in 1968 (in the sign above, you can still see the word "Cambria's" overlaying "Laube's") and closed in 1982.
