Title
Later Medieval to Post Medieval double looped sub-oval buckle (front and reverse)
Description
English: A complete, cast copper-alloy, double looped sub-oval buckle of probable later Medieval - Post Medieval date circa (AD 1350-1650).

The buckle frame is sub-oval in plan with rounded edges. The buckle consists of two sub oval loops with an integrally cast strap bar that is slightly recessed from the edge of the frame. Each loop is similar in size and slightly bevelled on the inside. The strap bar is narrowed and on both outer frames there is a centrally located incision which acts as a pin rest. The pin is formed from a single sheet of copper alloy that tapers to a broken point. The sheet has been folded around the central axis bar to form a pin. The edges of the reverse of the frame are sloped downwards towards the central axis bar.

Both the front face and the reverse of the buckle appear to be undecorated although the buckle may have once had a coating on the surface which has now been abraded. The buckle has an uneven dark green coloured patina. Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Whitehead (2003: p.53 ref no.291-295). There are also parallels on the PAS database, recorded from Long man, East Sussex (SUSS-D41264), Newport, West Midlands (HESH-2265D7 and Madley, Herefordshire (HESH-1211F2).

The buckle measures 23.1mm long, 17.89mm wide, is 3.53mm thick at its widest point on the frame and weighs 1.8 grams.
