Title |
Late medieval to post medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy buckle dating to the late medieval to early post medieval period, c. AD 1400-1550.
The buckle frame survives, the pin is missing. The frame is double looped, with both loops being D-shaped. The outer frame is slender on the horizontal sides and thickens on the vertical sides. The right hand vertical side is markedly thicker and almost appears like a proto-knop, while the left hand side is only slightly thickened. Both bear a slender horizontal groove as a pin rest, with additional smaller grooves present on the outer sides. The central bar is delicate and rectangular in cross section. Numerous similar examples are recorded on the database including LEIC-2239E8, the record for which states that: "A similar example is illustrated by Egan and Pritchard (1991, 88, no.386) from a late 14th century context in London and several very similar examples are illustrated by Margeson (1993, 30, fig.16, nos.168-173) from excavations in Norwich, all from post-medieval contexts, suggesting that the form was used for a long period." Measurements: 32.9mm length, 29.1mm width, 1.9mm thickness, weight 2.8g. |
