| Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy zoomorphic spout from a 15th-century pedestal-base ewer. In profile it is curved, terminating at the pouring spout in a moulded dog's head. The mouth of the dog is wide open, with an integral short tube protruding. The head is slightly angular, with a sub-rectangular ear on each side of the head; the ears protrude upwards above the crown of the head. The reverse of the spout curves downards, and is open. The surface of the spout has a pitted dark green patina on the exterior. The spout has maximum dimensions of 72.85 mm long, 16.39 mm wide, 17.5 mm high and it weighs 57.4 grams.
Lewis (1987, fig. 8A) illustrates a very similar dog's head spout, dating them to the 15th century. They were fixed to pedestal-base ewers, but are normally now found detached. |
