Title
Late medieval cauldron handle fitting -rear or
Description
English: Lead-alloy object in the design of a styleized dog's head. Probable terminal collar from handle of sheet metal bowl of 14th-16th C. AD date. Measures 25.7mm long, by 14mm wide and 16.2mm high. There is a hole passing through the centre of it from the mouth to the back of the head. This hole measures 3.7mm diameter where it emerges from the mouth and 7.4mm at the back of the head. The hole is blocked towards the back, apparently by metal (probably iron). The surface of the piece shows traces of a light green coating, possibly some form of paint or a corrosion product of copper, with which the lead may be alloyed. The weight is 23.44g.
