Title
Late medieval/early post-medieval rectangular double-looped buckle
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of late medieval to early post-medieval date. The loops are broadly rectangular in form and are asymmetrical; the apertures are of varying widths. On the side with the larger hole are three transverse grooves in a central position which probably acted as a pin rest. This side is slightly wider than the other. On the other side of the pin bar the hole is narrower, but the outer edge is very thick (W.: 9.25mm). The side of this edge is decorated with uneven semi-circular cusping. On the upper surface there is a diagonal groove to the edge of each cusp thus defining it. There is a further longitudinal incision below each semicircle. On the other side, there is a longitudinal groove just before the aperture. On its upper surface the buckle is largely bevelled both internally and externally. The lower surface is flat with the exception of the outer side of the narrower outer edge. Viewed in profile it can be seen that one of the sides has been bent upwards slightly. Further damage has occurred to the pin bar which has been bent upwards at its centre. There is orange iron staining from the pin around the central area of the pin bar. There is further corrosion product on the upper surface in the area of the 'pin rest', but also towards the centre of the other outer edge on both surfaces. The metal has a mid/dark-green patina, with numerous file marks, particularly to the lower surface. This, the form and decoration, suggest the date range offered above.
