Title |
Late early-medieval/medieval cheekpiece |
||
Description |
English: A slightly corroded fragment from a late early-medieval/Anglo-Scandinavian cast copper-alloy cheekpiece (c. 11th century AD). The fragment is formed of a broken loop with a broadly 'C-shaped' protrusion. The protrusion has a bilobate terminal. On the outer edge of the curve is a smaller trilobate protrusion. This may represent a degenerate animal's head, with the neck attaching it to the loop. At the base of the inner edge of the protrusion is a bilobate protrusion on the loop. The upper surface is slightly bevelled while the lower surface is flat. The metal has corroded to a dark red-brown colour with some areas of lighter corrosion product on both faces. It is seemingly plain. The breaks are old. The artefact is bent in profile, with the terminal higher than the loop. The fragment is not readily classifiable using the relevant typology (Williams 2007), although comparable (decorated) cheekpieces have been recorded on this database, e.g. KENT-A4A477, SF-656764. |
