Title |
Late early-medieval/medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy buckle with integral plate, probably of late early-medieval date. The frame is a slightly asymmetrical, elongated D shape with a trefoilate protrusion at the outer edge. The plate is narrower (W.: 13.3mm), with a slightly angled terminal. Adjacent to the frame is a perforation around which the pin would have been looped; the pin is now missing. Towards the terminal is a rivet hole in which the corroded remains of the iron rivet are still in place. The upper surface is decorated with longitudinal incisions parallel to the edges. There is possible further decoration within the field within, now obscured. The buckle has corroded to a red-brown colour with small patches of off-white and light-green corrosion product. Although this is an unusual buckle the redness of the metal could plausibly put the date between 1050 and 1150 AD. The frame has been bent upwards at a shallow angle as a result of old damage. |
