Description |
A decommissioned Essex-class aircraft carrier at Boston, Massachusetts (USA), 30 May 1973. The carrier is most certainly USS Wasp (CVS-18). Wasp was the only CVS on the U.S. Atlantic Coast to lose the gun emplacements on the stern, as visible here. The over-painted hull number on the island reads either "10" or "18". After decommissioning at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, on 1 July 1972, she was towed to Boston on 10 July. The ship was sold for scrapping on 21 May 1973 and towed to Kearny, New Jersey, in June 1973. Title from documentation provided by Ernst Halberstadt.; Gift; Ernst Halberstadt; September 5, 1974.; Date from documentation provided by Ernst Halberstadt.; “Project DOCUMERICA,” U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, photograph by Ernst Halberstadt.; Ship "Westward" return to Boston from Great Brewster under sail. |
