Title
Late afternoon - return toward Boston includes furling sails
Description
A decommissioned Essex-class aircraft carrier at Boston, Massachusetts (USA), 30 May 1973. The carrier is most certainly USS Wasp (CVS-18). Wasp was the only CVS on the U.S. Atlantic Coast to lose the gun emplacements on the stern, as visible here. The over-painted hull number on the island reads either "10" or "18". After decommissioning at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, on 1 July 1972, she was towed to Boston on 10 July. The ship was sold for scrapping on 21 May 1973 and towed to Kearny, New Jersey, in June 1973.
