Title
Late Saxon lead weight
Description
English: Early Medieval lead weight, rectangular with slightly chamfered sides and fragment of gilt copper alloy strip with chip-carved fine line interlace decoration set into upper surface. Some damage and pitting around edge of base. Weighs 8.41g, 0.30oz. This weight, allowing for damage, is close to one third (8.66g) of the significant unit of weight (26.6g) identified from around 200 Dublin finds (Mainman and Rogers Finds from Anglo-Scandinavian York (2000), p.2563). The interlace is similar to that on a piece of early Viking loot found in a grave in Norway, a gilt copper alloy Northumbrian mount of the 8th century, illustrated in Graham-Campbell (1980) no.309.
