Title |
Late Saxon lead weight |
||
Description |
English: Late Saxon Weight, bun-shaped, i.e. globular with flat top and base (diameter 16-17mm, 13mm thick), lead filled, with four incised transverse lines in exposed upper surface of lead, eight radiating notches in base, weighing 16.57g, 0.58oz, 255.6grains. Of Anglo-Scandinavian form it may represent two-thirds of the ‘significant’ weight of 26.6g identified from 200 examples from Dublin (Mainman and Rogers 2000, Finds from Anglo-Scandinavian York, 2563; Kruse in Med. Arch. 1992, 82 and 87). If so there has been a weight loss of 6.55% of the full weight of 17.73g. Alternatively it may equal two-thirds of a Scandinavian weight unit of 24.4g (Kruse op. cit. 86). If so the object is slightly overweight, by 0.0186%. The object is in quite good condition. Although the copper alloy casing is a little abraded, the lead core appears intact. 10th – 11th century. |
