Description |
English: Middle Saxon/Late Saxon incomplete copper alloy buckle plate, worn and corroded, decorated with two ?animal heads or skulls cast in high relief lying longitudinally facing towards narrowed attachment end with perforated oval terminal. Both heads have dots for eyes. The top of one head is partly removed by a broken circular perforation at broad end where the rest of the plate is missing. >23 x >9mm. Stylistically similar finds are known from a number of sites including Elsing (HER 40644), Postwick (HER 25984), Wendling (HER 40868), St Faith’s Lane, Norwich (HER 373) and Fishergate, York (Rogers 1993) fig.652, no.5320. 9th century. |
