Title |
Late Saxon copper alloy D-shaped buckle |
||
Description |
English: Late Saxon D-shaped buckle frame, worn and corroded, shaped outside edge with four small irregular projections flanking central triangular lobe, reflecting engraved foliate interlace decoration on face, narrowed bar, pin missing, 30 x 35mm. The shape of the frame and decoration suggest influence of the Ringerike style. Closest to examples from Little Dunham (HER 30277) and Tacolneston (HER 35667), other broadly similar examples are known from Corpusty (HER 33442 and HER 33872), Fring (HER 23001), Grimston (HER 30243), Narborough (HER 34961), West Rudham (HER 28131), Scarning (HER 36096), Snettisham (HER 29871 and HER 38194), East Walton (HER 30441) and Whissonsett (HER 31800). One example from Hindringham (HER 25659) retains a sheet plate. One from Norwich (HER 156) has been published (Margeson 1983, no.128). Larger examples have been found in Barton Bendish (HER 18852) and West Walton (HER 18947). 11th century. |
