Description |
English: Incomplete Late Saxon buckle with integral trapezoidal plate and engraved niello filled decoration. The plate is pierced by a pin hole and four rivet holes, and on its reverse a 3mm-high rib runs along the sides and transversely across the front of the pin hole On the small surviving fragment of one side of the frame an open-mouthed animal head with ring-and-dot eye appears to bite a corner of the plate, while the plate is decorated with lines along the sides and attachment edge, a double-line saltire and other curving lines. >28mm x >47mm. Width of attachment edge 33.5mm. 11th century. |
