Title |
Late Saxon/Medieval D-shaped buckle frame |
||
Description |
English: Late Saxon / Medieval D-shaped buckle frame, worn and corroded, thick D-sectioned outside edge with pin-groove between two groups of opposed incised oblique lines giving the appearance of twisting with stylised animal head with elongated pointed ears and snout at both ends of narrowed bar, pin missing, 24 x 24mm. Cf. examples from Ashill (HER 30270) and Hindringham (HER 25672). The shape of the frame and decoration suggest influence of the Ringerike style such as that on a buckle frame from Repps-with-Bastwick (HER 37007), although this example (and those from
Ashill and Hindringham) may be somewhat later and relate to larger sword belt buckles (Cf. Ashley 2006, fig.1, no.5 for an example from Bacton (HER 1073)). 11th–12th century. |
