Title |
Late Roman to early Early-medieval buckle fragment |
||
Description |
English: A fragment from a copper-alloy buckle frame of late Roman to early Early-medieval date. This piece is a typical example of the so-called 'Soldiers and settlers' material of the late 4th to early 5th century AD. It is classified as type IA buckle plate (see S.C. Hawkes and C.G. Dunning; 1961; pp. 42).
The frame takes the form of two dolphins or sea monsters whose faces meet at the centre of the curved outer edge where there is a slightly recessed lozenge-shaped pin rest. Each animal has a long fin down the length of its back and four parallel gill slits, the latter depicted by incised lines. The reverse is plain. The axis bar and buckle plate are missing. The metal is light grey in colour and probably contains a significant proportion of tin. The object measures 42.6mm wide, 20.4mm high and 4mm thick; it weighs 7.51g. |
