Title
Late Roman buckle
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy zoomorphic buckle dating from the late Roman to early Medieval period, 350-450 AD. The buckle is D shaped, with moulded decoration on the outer frame in the shape of two crested dolphins. The centre of the outer frame curves to create the head then widens where the dolphins mouths are, these are open wide in a triangular shape. At the corner of each mouth is a circular hole. There is a moulded triangle shape inbetween each open mouth, and a groove for the pin to sit in. The frame narrows towards the attachment edge, and is circular in cross section. There is a circular loop projecting out from the side of the narrow part of the frame. This has a small circular hole where the pin or bolt would have attached to secure the loop, tongue and plate. A third of the frame is missing, and one of the attachment loops, the breaks are worn. The buckle is a grey brown colour, with patches of light green. The buckle measures 43.2mm in length, 31.3mm in width and weighs 11.81g.

This buckle can be classified as a Hawkes and Dunning Type IIA and is typical of the so-called 'Soldiers and settlers' material of the late 4th to early 5th century (Hawkes and Dunning 1961, page 53). Other examples can be seen in Appels and Lacock 2007, page 168, number 169 and Bishop and Coulston 2006, page 219, number 6.
