Title |
Late Palaeolithic handaxe |
||
Description |
English: Lower Palaeolithic handaxe. Dimensions >120 x 82 x 35mm. Pointed ovate, broken at the pointed tip. Probably made on a large flake, the dorsal face of which is finished by peripheral flaking except for a large inclusion which has apparently resisted removal. The ventral face is more completely finished by shallow peripheral flaking. The main body of the handaxe is stained brown, with large areas of buff, particularly on the dorsal face. The break at the tip is not recent, but is lightly stained, probably over pale grey flint. The general condition is lightly rolled (see sketch). 600,000 to 100,000 BP. There are no previous records of handaxes from Needham parish but Wymer (Palaeolithic Sites of East Anglia (1985), 147) refers to examples from neighbouring Brockdish and Weybread, while the rich Palaeolithic site at Hoxne is not far away. |
