Title
Late Mesolithic to early Neolithic Tranchet Axehead
Description
English: A flaked flint pick or possible tranchet axe dating to a late Mesolithic to early Neolithic period. The pick is made on an elongate sub-cylindrical nodule of mottled grey flint with an asymmetric/irregular cross-section. One end is formed by rough bifacial flaking and may originally have been transversely flaked on one face to form a tranchet cutting edge (although this is much damaged, possibly in antiquity which may be attempts at secondary sharpening but have left part of this end with a flat facetted edge). The other end retains a large area of slightly worn cortex and has been crudely bifacially flaked on one edge only and heavily battered, probably during manufacture. The exposed flint has a thin blue-white and white mid-gloss patina and there are sporadic red-brown ferrous stains in places.

Date: Late Mesolithic to early Neolithic 6500 to 3300 BC.

Dimensions: 147mm x 48mm x 37mm.

Weight: 300g.
