Title
Late Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead
Description
English: A complete Late Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead dating to c.8000 - 4000 BC.

The axehead is made of a medium grey flint that is light grey in parts with frequent mottled white inclusions and banding of lighter and darker grey. It has a semi-glossy patina. One surface retains thin chalky white pebble cortex on about one fifth of its surface.

The implement has relatively parallel sides which widen slightly towards the blade edge and narrowing slightly to a wide rounded point at its opposite edge. It has a lozenge shaped cross-section for most of its length baring the blade edge which become a pointed oval in cross section.

The blade edge is rounded and has been narrowed with large longitudinal flake removals one one side of the axeheads with only one further removal on the opposite surface. The butt of the axe has short, parallel, semi-abrupt retouch on one side to provide a smoothed rounded edge.

The object measures 121.3mm in length and weighs 140.44 grams. At the centre, the cross-section measures 31.5mm wide and 30.8mm thick. At the blade's maximum width the cross section measures 38.3mm wide and 19.9mm thick. At the butt of the axe the cross section measures 21.1mm wide and 14.9mm thick.
