Title
Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval: Zoomorphic double looped buckle
Description
English: A complete copper alloy double looped buckle, with zoomorphic decoration, of probable Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1500 to AD 1650).

The buckle consists of a double oval looped buckle (spectacle), with moulded transverse ridges on the frame as decoration. Projecting from one outer edge is a zoomorphic head. The head is triangular in shape, with pointed oval shaped eyes, and appears to be representing a bird's head. Part of the sheet copper alloy buckle plate is still present wrapped around the central bar. Iron corrosion products (from an iron pin) cover the buckle plate.
The buckle measures 35.53 mm in length, 13.82 mm wide and 7.85 mm thick. It weighs 4.4 g.

The buckle is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Several similar buckles have been recorded on the PAS database, including: SF-165D23, SUSS-B444D7, NARC1752, SUR-FFBAE6 and YORYM-37F0B2. No published parallels have been found, but it is similar in style to Nos 387-389 on page 64 in Whitehead, 1996. It is reasonable to assume that this buckle is of a similar Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1500 to AD 1650.
